by Walt Whitman. Engravings by Gaylord Schanilec. Published by Gwasg Gregynog (1991)
Bound by Glenn Malkin, 2016.
Three part full-leather binding. Author titled in gilt on the red leather spine. Blue and grey goatskin to the boards, split and separated by a red leather recess. Inlaid leather lines with foil tooling. Back pared onlay to the front board.
The design is based on the grey and blue uniforms of the opposing sides of the American civil war, the recessed red line being the boundary between the northern and southern states. The multi-coloured inlaid leather lines represent the dead, their affiliation being lost as they fell across the landscape. The moon looking down on the scene is inspired by one of the many wonderful plates in this large format volume.
Presented in a red-suede lined drop-back box, with paper label and hand-dyed cloth mirroring the binding.
