The Winters Tale by William Shakespeare

Available for sale: £2,000 plus postage

Published by The Limited Editions Club (New York, 1940). Bound by Glenn Malkin 2025
Bound in full blue purple Pentland goat with lightly airbrushed dark gradients. Slashes in the leather reveal red silk beneath. Full leather doublures and batik spiderweb endpapers. Silk hand-sewn endbands and edges decorated with sprinkled gold leaf and acrylic ink. Presented in a suede lined bespoke wooden box with title and decorative elements to the lid.
The slashed design represents the infamous death of one of the characters at the claws of a bear, whilst simultaneously alluding to the Tudor fashion of slashed clothing to reveal colourful silk beneath as a demonstration of status and wealth. The gold tooled lines on the front and rear suggest the pages of the scripts used by the players when performing this play.
