One-Day Workshop

Bookbinding Jigs and a Phase Box

Tuesday 14th May 2024

Hull Scrapstore 10:00am – 4:30pm

£65 per person including materials

This one-day workshop is suitable for the beginner to bookbinding as well as those with some experience.  Accuracy and precision in cutting with a craft knife will be important
In this one-day workshop we shall look at making a few of the commonly used jigs and devices which are helpful in bookbinding.
We shall start by making a simple corner jig to help accurately cut cloth or paper corners when covering a board. We shall also make a folding jig to help us quickly fold our sheets of paper accurately and squarely, and then finally we shall make a piercing cradle to help us hold our sections in the perfect orientation when piercing sewing holes.
In the afternoon, we shall use the jigs we have made to help create a simple pamphlet-stitched booklet and then we will make a phase box using a single piece of card. This is a conservation enclosure for a book to protect it from dust and damage. You will be able to make a phase box for a small book of your own if you wish.
There are a maximum of ten places available so booking is essential. A non-refundable deposit of £30 is required when booking (PayPal link below), the rest being payable on the day by cash or cheque (sorry, cards are not accepted). Direct bank transfer may alternatively be used by prior agreement.
All the materials and tools required will be provided, as will tea/coffee and biscuits. You will need to bring your own lunch, though there are shops a short walk away. For this workshop it may be useful if you could bring along an apron and/or old towel as we will be using a limited amount of glue.
