Off-Boards Binding Workshop Details

Two-Day Workshop
Making an Off-Boards (or Three-Part) Binding
Monday 7th & Tuesday 8th April 2025

Hull Scrapstore 10:00am – approx 4:30pm each day
£135 per person including materials
This style of binding is so called because the spine is covered separately to the two boards, usually in different materials. this opens up a wide range of design possibilities with any design work being completed on the boards before they are attached to the book. This structure is therefore frequently used by professionals when creating fine/design bindings.

In this two-day workshop we shall create a binding with a leather spine and decorative paper to the boards. Given the time and facilities we have available, we shall be working with old Folio Society books (provided) and will start by learning to ‘pull’ these books, that is removing the covers and preparing the spine ready for re-binding. We shall add new endpapers and then hand-sew some simple end bands before adding linings and a hollow. After securing the linings to inner boards we will have prepared, the spine leather can be applied and the headcaps formed. After filling in the inner boards we shall then prepare the outer boards and put all parts of the binding together. The inside of the boards will be filled in and finally the paste down secured.
This workshop is ideally suited for those who have some experience of bookbinding but beginners who have good craft skills are welcome to attend. Critical to the success of the workshop will be an ability to measure and cut precisely using a craft knife and also show dexterity in close-up work when making the end bands. There is quite a bit to get through over the two days!

There will be gluing involved so an apron or old towel is recommended. It would also be useful if you could bring a medium sized hammer on the first day though I will have a couple of spares so don’t worry if not. I will let you know in advance if there is anything else you will require for the workshop.

Please note that it will be necessary to attend the whole workshop to complete the project, so please do not book unless you can commit to attending both days.
Detailed handout notes will be provided, as will all required tools and materials, tea, coffee and biscuits. You will need to bring your own lunch, though there are shops nearby. The Scrapstore shop will be open over lunchtime should you like to browse for craft materials and supplies at very low prices!

A non-refundable deposit of £55 per person is due on booking with the remainder (£80) being payable on the day by cash or cheque (sorry, no card payments). Alternatively you can pay by bank transfer on or prior to, the workshop – please request account details. To book your place please click on the PayPal payment button below. Please let me know if you have any queries.,
