One-Day Workshop

Creating a Book Chemise and Quick Slip-Case

Tuesday 10th March 2026

Hull Scrapstore 10:00am – 4:30pm

£65 per person including materials

This one-day workshop is suitable for the beginner to bookbinding as well as those with some experience. All materials and tools will be provided
A chemise is a loose cover which surrounds a book offering both protection and an attractive design element to the binding. It is also sometimes used to protect the spine of a book housed in a slip case from the effects of light or dust.
In this workshop we shall be making a cloth covered stiff chemise to protect a hardback book. This will require very precise measurements and cutting of materials so that the book will fit snugly. We will then make a quick version of a slip case from thin card, which is optimistically referred to as the ten-minute slip case, so that the book is fully protected. The slip case could later be covered with decorative paper but it is intended to be a practical and protective feature first and foremost.
All tools and materials will be provided, including suitable hardback books. Once participants have learned the approach then making a chemise and quick slip case at home for their own books should be straightforward. Since we will be using PVA, it would be wise to bring an apron and/or old towel along as well as something for lunch. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available.
As usual, there are a maximum of just ten places available on this workshop, so early booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment. Booking is made using the PayPal payment button below to pay a non-refundable £30 deposit. The remainder is payable on the day in cash or cheque please, or via bank transfer by prior arrangement.
Please get in touch if you have any questions.
