Bookbinding Workshops

Learn bookbinding in a friendly informal group environment

One and two-day bookbinding workshops are held regularly in Hull as well as group workshops around the country for the Society of Bookbinders and other organisations.
Please see below for further details and dates of forthcoming bookbinding workshops. You can also contact Glenn to be added to the e-mailing list to be amongst the first to learn of new workshops as they are organised.
Workshops in Hull are usually held at the Hull ScrapStore, which is just off Hessle Road in west Hull and is very easily accessible via the M62 motorway from the west. Not only does this venue offer a great workshop space, but it also has a fabulous shop selling all sorts of craft supplies including many items at ridiculously low prices and constantly changing stock! Bookings for workshops are accepted on a strict first-come, first-served basis on payment of deposit.

A Long-Stitch Leather Wrap-Around Binding

This one-day workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those with some bookbinding experience.
This is one of the most popular book structures to learn as it is ideal for journals and notebooks and can be made with a variety of materials and using a range of decorative design techniques and approaches. We shall be sewing a blank book block and creating a leather cover with a leather thong closure.

The Sewn-Boards Binding

Hull Scrapstore, 10:00 to 4:30 approx

This one-day workshop is a repeat of October’s workshop given there were a number of people who were unable to secure a place to learn this popular style of book. It is suitable for beginners as well as those with some bookbinding experience. The Sewn-boards binding is an extremely useful style to learn as the book opens absolutely flat, so it is very useful for writing in or sketching, etc. The spine of the covers will be covered with cloth and there will be decorative paper covering the boards.

Making Handy Bookbinding Jigs and a Phase Box

Hull Scrapstore, 10:00 to 4:30 approx

£65 including materials

This one-day workshop was requested by previous participants and is suitable for beginners as well as those with some bookbinding experience.
Bookbinders use a variety of jigs, tools and guides to help ensure precision and accuracy when carrying out routine or regular tasks. Here we will be making a useful corner cutting jig, a folding guide and a handy piercing cradle, along with perhaps one or two other things if time allows. We will also learn to make a useful phase box to protect our books. Once we have made these tools we will then use them to make a simple pamphlet stitched booklet.

The Origata Binding

Hull Scrapstore, 10:00 to 4:30 approx

This one-day workshop is suitable for the beginner to bookbinding as well as those with some experience.
We will be making the fabulous Origata binding – a relatively new book structure devised by Julie Auzillon in France. It is ideal as a conservation binding as the book block itself can be removed easily without damage given there need be very little glue used.
This structure also lends itself to a wide number of variations in terms of design elements and materials used and can be used for single section books or thicker multi-section books.
At this workshop we shall be making my version of this binding which incorporates decorative paper pastedowns and a vellum spine created from old re-cycled legal documents, though alternative materials may also be available.

Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd July 2024

The Edelpappband or Millimeter Binding

Hull Scrapstore, 10:00 to 4:30 approx each day

This two day workshop is ideal for those with some experience of attending bookbinding workshops, but beginners who demonstrate dexterity and precision in other crafts would also be welcome to attend.
The Edelpappband binding is quite a common style of fine binding on the continent but is less used here in the UK. There are a number of versions of this approach some of which are also referred to as the Millimeter Binding. Those who are familiar with the Bradel binding will probably see some similarities in structure here, though this style uses leather along the head and tail of the binding. Since this is a two day workshop we will be making this from scratch including folding and trimming the sections, rounding and part-backing the spine, cutting the boards and other materials, and making our own cloth endbands.
Participants will need to attend both days to complete the project so please check your availability for the Monday and Tuesday before booking.
Sorry – this workshop is now full . Please get in touch if you would like to be added to a waiting list in case of cancellations
