The above engraving shows a sixteenth century bindery. The chap at the back is using a 'sewing frame' to sew together the sections of a book, whilst at the front a 'plough' is being used to smooth the edges of the book block once it has been sewn together. A 'laying press' can be seen leaning against a block in the bottom left of the picture, as a book is clamped together whilst being worked. Tools on the wall include knives, hammers and finishing tools. All of these are still used in traditional binderies today, as the tools and techniques of quality hand bookbinders have changed little over the years.
I'm happy to say that the clothing fashions have moved on a little.
